Psychological therapy for children and adolescents in Masterton and the wider Wairarapa, supporting emotional wellbeing, confidence, coping strategies and social development through tailored, age-appropriate approaches.
Book an AppointmentI provide psychological therapy for children and adolescents experiencing emotional, behavioural and social difficulties. Sessions are offered at my private practice in Masterton, Wairarapa.
My approach is tailored to each child's age, developmental stage and individual needs. Therapy focuses on helping children understand and manage their emotions, develop coping strategies and build confidence.
Children often find it difficult to express their thoughts and feelings through words alone. Play provides a natural way for younger children to communicate, explore their experiences and develop new skills.
I incorporate play-based therapeutic approaches, including sand tray activities, storytelling, creative activities and therapeutic games. These approaches are used alongside psychological strategies to support emotional understanding, regulation and problem-solving.
For older children and adolescents, therapy may involve talking, practical strategies and evidence-based psychological approaches suited to their needs.
Therapy may be helpful for children and adolescents experiencing:
Anxiety and worries: Including separation anxiety, social anxiety and general worries.
Emotional regulation difficulties: Managing anger, frustration and overwhelming emotions.
School-related difficulties: Including school anxiety, school avoidance and difficulties coping with school demands.
Self-esteem and confidence: Developing confidence and a more positive sense of self.
Social and relationship difficulties: Managing friendships, peer relationships and social situations.
Adjustment and life changes: Coping with family changes, transitions and stressful experiences.
Neurodevelopmental differences: Supporting children with ADHD, autism and related differences to understand their needs and develop practical coping strategies.
Parents and caregivers play an important role in supporting their child's emotional wellbeing.
Depending on the child's age and needs, therapy may include parent consultations to help families understand their child's difficulties and develop strategies to support progress at home.
Therapeutic support begins with an initial consultation, usually with a parent or caregiver, to discuss your child's needs, relevant background information and current concerns.
During this appointment, we will identify goals, consider whether therapy is appropriate and discuss the recommended number and frequency of sessions.
Therapy generally involves a series of appointments rather than a single session. The number of sessions will depend on your child's needs, with progress reviewed along the way.
Initial consultation: $230 (including GST)
Therapy sessions: $230 per session (including GST)
Therapy appointments are offered in person at my Masterton office. This service is not currently offered in Wellington.
